Weila, a baby Bornean orangutan born on June 21, 2025, at Utah’s Hogle Zoo to 24-year-old Kawan, required hand-rearing after her mother did not nurse her. Caregivers provided 24-hour care to ensure her health and development. To help Weila grow up within an orangutan family, she was gradually introduced to Acara, an experienced foster mother, in August 2025. The two bonded successfully, and by early September, they were spending time together in the Great Apes habitat. Weila is thriving under Acara’s care, while Kawan continues to do well under the zoo’s support, reflecting Hogle Zoo’s dedication to orangutan welfare and conservation.
