Sully is a male Western lowland gorilla born to Asha at Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in Colorado Springs on July 21, 2025, marking the zoo’s first gorilla birth in nearly 13 years. Sully’s father is Goma, and both parents are critically endangered gorillas.
The name “Sully” was chosen through a fundraising naming contest where the public voted, and it reflects his sweet and gentle nature, with hopes that he will grow into a protective silverback like his father. The contest raised over $39,000, which goes toward primate care and facilities at the zoo.
Sully and his family represent the Western lowland gorilla species’ struggle against habitat loss and threats from coltan mining. The zoo actively promotes electronics recycling to help address these threats.
