Mara is a female western lowland gorilla born at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium on June 29, 2024. Her mother is Sue, a first-time mom who provides attentive care, and Mara is currently thriving and learning from her troop. Mara’s name was selected by the Congo Expedition Animal Care team to honor contributors to the zoo’s gorilla foster care program.
Mara is the 35th gorilla born at the Columbus Zoo since 1956, highlighting the zoo’s long history of gorilla conservation. As part of a critically endangered species, Mara’s birth supports crucial conservation efforts. She is closely monitored and cared for by both her mother and the zoo’s expert animal care team. Mara can be visited at the Columbus Zoo’s Congo Expedition area, where the troop includes her mother Sue and other related adult and young gorillas.
