Kyansa, a baby female chimpanzee at Sedgwick County Zoo, was born on April 7, 2025, to mother Mahale via a planned C-section, following the tragic loss of Mahale’s previous baby, Kucheza. Named after a peak in Tanzania’s Mahale Mountains, Kyansa is now nearly six months old and thriving. She has grown nine teeth, is beginning to try solid foods, and shows a playful, curious personality while learning from her chimp friends. Her birth and development highlight the importance of chimpanzee conservation and the vital role accredited zoos play in protecting this endangered species.
