Kwame the Gorilla in Pictures

Kwame is a young gorilla at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, born on July 13, 2023. She is the daughter of Sully, who was initially thought to be male before Kwame’s surprise birth. Kwame is described by the zoo’s Animal Care team as having a fun and playful personality, actively engaging with other gorillas and her keepers through play wrestling, chest beating, twirling, and running around. She is very social, often interacting with various members of the gorilla troop including Zahra, Kamina, Mac, and Kinyani. Kwame and her mother Sully can be seen at the Congo Expedition area of the zoo. Her birth is significant as she is the 35th gorilla born at the Columbus Zoo, which has a pioneering role in gorilla conservation and breeding programs dating back to 1956. The zoo’s conservation efforts focus on protecting critically endangered western lowland gorillas like Kwame through breeding, social group care, and fostering programs when necessary. Sully is noted to be an attentive and loving mother to Kwame, ensuring close bonding and nurturing.
