Kafele is a young female western lowland gorilla residing at Port Lympne Reserve in Kent. Since her birth, she has become a star of the park’s “Palace of the Apes,” known for her playful personality and strong family bonds. Kafele was born on May 18, 2023. Her arrival was a significant event for the Aspinall Foundation’s breeding program, which is one of the most successful in the world for critically endangered western lowland gorillas. Now a playful two-year-old, she has hit key milestones—from being a tiny newborn to an independent climber—while supported by a unique multi-generational family bond involving her mother, siblings, and grandmother, Sangha. Her development in the “Palace of the Apes” serves as a success story for the Aspinall Foundation, with the long-term hope that she may one day join their “Back to the Wild” reintroduction program.
