Jabari is the first baby gorilla ever born in Austria, at Schmiding Zoo. He was born on July 7, 2024. Jabari’s birth was challenging; his mother Kibibi struggled during labor and was initially too weak to care for him, leading zookeepers to step in with glucose and formula milk. After about three days, Kibibi recovered and accepted Jabari back, resuming her role as a loving and protective mother.
Named “Jabari,” meaning brave in Swahili, he has become a symbol of hope for Western lowland gorilla conservation. Jabari is growing strong, curious, and playful, often seen clinging to his mom as he explores their enclosure. He marks an important milestone for Austria and embodies the efforts of the zoo staff dedicated to nurturing and preserving this endangered species.
