Western Lowland Gorilla, born at Espace Zoologique St. Martin La Plaine, deceased, born 2019.
Western lowland gorillas face extinction in the wild, with fewer than 100,000 remaining across their African range. The subspecies carries a Critically Endangered status from the IUCN, making every birth in managed care part of a broader conservation effort.
Xia entered the world at Espace Zoologique St. Martin La Plaine on a January morning in 2019. Her parents, Gypsy and Likal, were part of the zoo’s established gorilla group. Born into captivity, she represented hope for her endangered subspecies.
Tragedy struck the young gorilla troop that summer. An accident involving her father Likal claimed Xia’s life in early July, just five months after her birth. She died at the same French zoo where she had been born.
Her brief existence highlights both the promise and fragility of gorilla conservation programs. Each loss in managed populations carries weight, particularly for a species whose wild counterparts face mounting pressures from habitat destruction and human encroachment across Central and West Africa.
