Venus, a two‑year‑old western lowland gorilla, entered London Zoo’s family on her birth day.
When the baby gorilla arrived at London Zoo on 8 February 2024, she was already surrounded by her mother Effie and father Kiburi, who had been bred in the same facility. Growing up in the familiar enclosure, Venus has spent every day exploring the naturalistic habitat designed to mimic her wild cousins. The keepers often notice her curious gaze as she investigates the interactive enrichment items set up for her development.
At just two years old, she is still learning the social cues that will guide her future interactions with her troop. Her gentle nature makes her a favorite among visitors, who enjoy watching her play with plush toys and observe her foraging behavior.
London Zoo provides a stable environment where Venus can thrive while contributing to the conservation of her critically endangered subspecies. The team is committed to monitoring her health and supporting her growth into a healthy adult gorilla.
Her presence at the zoo highlights the importance of captive breeding programs in protecting western lowland gorillas from the threats that have pushed their wild populations to the brink.
As she matures, the zoo will continue to document her milestones, ensuring that each stage of her life adds to our collective understanding of gorilla behavior and care.
