About Tamu

Tamu was a female Western Lowland Gorilla who died tragically young on December 27, 2011. She lived only five months before succumbing to peritonitis caused by a bacterial infection.

Born on July 25, 2011, at Royal Rotterdam Zoological Gardens, she was captive-born to parents Tamani and Bokito. Her brief life was spent entirely at the Rotterdam zoo where she came into the world.

The young gorilla’s death from bacterial infection highlights the vulnerability of infant gorillas, even in captive settings with veterinary care. Her short time with her family at Rotterdam ended far too soon.
