A 39‑year‑old western lowland gorilla, Tamba enriches Port Lymne’s troop after a life of careful transfers.
A gentle presence at Port Lymne, Tamba has spent nearly four decades enriching the troop. Born on 14 September 1986 at Howletts Wild Animal Park, she is the daughter of Shamba and Bitam. Her early years unfolded among the familiar sounds of Howletts before the first move in 1992.
In May 1992 she was transferred to Port Lympne Wild Animal Park, where keepers observed her adapting quickly to a new group. Less than a year later, she returned to Howletts, spending the bulk of her adult life there while the park’s staff monitored her health and social interactions.
After two decades back at Howletts, a November 2013 transfer brought her home again to Port Lymne, where she remains a cornerstone of the western lowland gorilla community. At 39 years old, she continues to thrive under dedicated care, embodying the resilience of a critically endangered subspecies.
Her story reflects the careful planning behind managed populations, each move recorded to support the conservation of Gorilla gorilla gorilla worldwide.
