A 35‑year‑old male western lowland gorilla, born and thriving at Zoo Atlanta.
A thunderous chest beat echoed through the Atlanta enclosure on a spring morning in 1991, marking the arrival of a new member of the western lowland gorilla troop. He entered the world on 14 May 1991, the son of Kuchi and Ozoum, and has never left the grounds that first welcomed him.
Raised under the watchful eyes of his mother, he grew into a robust silverback, his presence shaping the dynamics of the group. His lineage traces back to two seasoned gorillas, a fact keepers often reference when discussing genetic diversity within the captive population.
Now 35 years old, he remains a cornerstone of the zoo’s great ape exhibit. The species he represents, Gorilla gorilla gorilla, carries a Critically Endangered status on the IUCN Red List, underscoring the importance of his role in education and conservation awareness.
Every day he can be seen lounging on the elevated platforms or foraging among the enrichment items scattered throughout his habitat. Visitors leave with a deeper appreciation for the challenges his wild counterparts face, thanks to his calm yet commanding demeanor.
