Sonja

Sonja was a female Western Lowland Gorilla who died on May 14, 2000. She lived to 28 years of age.

Born in Gabon on June 4, 1972, she was wild-caught rather than born in captivity. Her parents were both wild gorillas.

After arriving in Europe as a young gorilla, she first lived at Gelsenkirchen Zoo from February 27, 1974 to May 3, 1974. She then moved to Zoo Hannover, where she spent the remainder of her life from May 3, 1974 until her death. She died of a heart attack at Zoo Hannover.
