About Shango

When Shango first swung into the San Francisco Zoological Society in 1989, he was already a promise of hope for a species in peril. Raised by his mother Bawang and father Mkubwa, he grew into a sturdy silverback, learning to navigate the complex social dynamics of his troop.

After fifteen years in San Francisco, he moved to Sedgwick County Zoo in May 2004, where his presence helped enrich the lives of visitors and fellow gorillas alike. He spent thirteen years there before joining Zoo Miami in May 2017, a transfer that marked a new chapter in his long, managed life.

In May 2025, the gorilla journeyed to Brookfield Zoo, where he now spends his days in a spacious enclosure designed to mimic his natural habitat. His subspecies, Gorilla gorilla gorilla, remains listed as Critically Endangered by the IUCN, underscoring the importance of continued conservation efforts.
