Shamavu

Born on the first day of 2010 in the Congo, he entered the world as a captive-born member of the critically endangered Grauer’s gorilla subspecies. Within a year his early weeks were spent moving between facilities, first to an unknown location and then briefly with Gorilla Doctors before finding a permanent home.

Since October 2011 he has called the Gorilla Rehabilitation and Conservation Education centre his home, where keepers monitor his growth and health as part of their education program. His lineage traces back to wild parents, a reminder of the genetic bridge between captive care and wild populations.

Now in his teens, he exemplifies the resilience of his subspecies, which the IUCN lists as Critically Endangered. Visitors to the centre often pause to watch his calm movements, gaining a glimpse of a species that survives on the edge of extinction.
