Eastern Lowland (Grauer's) Gorilla at Gorilla Rehabilitation and Conservation Education, born 2026.
Eastern Lowland gorillas face extinction in the wild, making every birth precious for the survival of the subspecies. Born in Congo on June 3rd, 2026, to wild parents, Shamavu entered the world as part of the most endangered gorilla population on Earth. His subspecies, Grauer’s gorilla, holds the grim distinction of being listed as Critically Endangered by the IUCN.
Early life brought multiple relocations across different facilities. After spending time at an unknown location through early September 2011, he moved to Gorilla Doctors in October of that year. Within weeks, another transfer brought him to Gorilla Rehabilitation and Conservation Education, where he has remained since late October 2011.
More than a decade has passed since his arrival at the rehabilitation center. His presence there reflects the ongoing conservation efforts needed to protect his subspecies, which continues to face severe threats in its native Democratic Republic of Congo habitat.
