Sanki, a 28‑year‑old western lowland gorilla, has spent her whole life at Howletts Wild Animal Park.
A lively presence in the Howletts troop, Sanki was born on 4 July 1998 to Sounda and Kifu. Her mother’s gentle guidance helped shape her early years, and the keeper team has watched her grow alongside her family.
Her western lowland lineage places her among the most imperiled great apes, classified as Critically Endangered by the IUCN. Each day she contributes to the survival story of her subspecies, offering a living link to wild populations that are vanishing.
Now 28 years old, she remains a familiar face for visitors and a steady member of the group. Her long tenure at the park makes her one of the longest‑resident gorillas in the collection, and her calm demeanor continues to charm both staff and guests alike.
The park’s records show she has never needed to relocate; her entire life has unfolded within the same environment. This stability has allowed keepers to build a deep understanding of her habits and health, ensuring she receives the best possible care.
