SamSam

SamSam was a male Western Lowland Gorilla who died on October 9, 2008. He lived to 36 years of age.

Born in Cameroon in 1972, he was wild-caught rather than born in captivity. Both his parents were wild gorillas.

Throughout his life, SamSam lived at several European zoos. His captive life began at Royal Rotterdam Zoological Gardens in 1974, where he spent over a decade. He then moved to Edinburgh Zoo in 1985, followed by transfers to Blackpool Zoo in 1993 and back to Edinburgh Zoo in 1999. His final years were spent at Twycross Zoo, where he arrived in 2006 and remained until his death two years later.
