A 42‑year‑old western lowland gorilla at Los Angeles Zoo, born in Cincinnati and a long‑time resident.
Rapunzel entered the world on 20 February 1984 at Cincinnati Zoo, the daughter of Amani and Ramses I. Her early years were spent under the watchful eyes of keepers who noted her steady growth. In 1988 she made the move to Los Angeles Zoo & Botanical Gardens, where she would later return after a stint elsewhere.
A transfer in April 2003 took her to Denver Zoo, adding a new chapter to her life in a different environment. Four years later, in September 2007, she came back to Los Angeles, where she remains a familiar face for visitors and staff alike. Her presence helps illustrate the plight of the western lowland gorilla, a subspecies listed as Critically Endangered by the IUCN.
Now 42 years old, she continues to thrive in managed care, embodying the successes and challenges of captive breeding programs. Her story, marked by multiple relocations, underscores the dedication of zoos to provide stable, long‑term homes for these remarkable apes.
