Pole Pole
Pole Pole was a male western lowland gorilla who lived from 1989 to 2021, spending most of his life at Loro Parque.
A captive-born western lowland gorilla entered the world at Zoo Z rich on 28 December 1989, the son of Inge and N’gola. Within months he was moved to the Zoologisch‑botanischer Garten Wilhelma, where he began his early social development under close keeper observation.
His longest stay began in July 1995 when he arrived at Loro Parque. For over twenty‑five years he became a familiar presence for visitors, his silverback stature marking the passage of time in the troop. Keepers noted his health closely, especially as the species faces a critical risk of extinction in the wild.
On 22 January 2021, after a possible stroke, he was humanely euthanized at the age of 31. His life spanned four zoological institutions, reflecting the collaborative nature of European gorilla management programs.
