Pau Pau, a 40‑year‑old male western lowland gorilla, spent his later years at Apenheul Primate Park after decades in
Born on the African continent in 1985, he entered the world as a wild‑caught western lowland gorilla. His early life remained hidden from human eyes, but his genetic heritage tied him to a subspecies listed as Critically Endangered by the IUCN.
A transfer on 6 January 1987 took him to Taipei Zoo, where he would remain for over three decades. Those years saw him grow from a juvenile into a seasoned adult, his presence a quiet anchor for the troop he joined.
In March 2018, another move brought him to Apenheul Primate Park. The new environment offered fresh enrichment, and keepers noted his adaptation with careful monitoring. Sadly, health complications escalated, and on 14 May 2025 he was euthanised at the park.
He lived to the age of 40, a full span for his kind in captivity. His life story, marked by two transfers and a long tenure in Asia, reflects both the challenges and dedication of modern gorilla care.
