Parry was found in June 2016 foraging in a village in Eastern Congo, friendly with humans after early captivity.
Parry is a male Western Lowland Gorilla living at Mefou Primate Sanctuary. Born on January 1, 2011, he was discovered in June 2016 foraging in a village in Eastern Congo.
His story began in the wild, where both his parents lived as free gorillas. At some point during his infancy, he was likely captured and kept under human care before being released or escaping back into the wild.
When villagers found him in 2016, his complete comfort around humans revealed his unusual past. Most wild gorillas would flee from human contact, but Parry showed no fear. This behavior strongly suggested he had been raised by people during his early development.
After his discovery, he was transferred to IDA Africa in June 2016, then moved to Mefou Primate Sanctuary that same month. The sanctuary provides him with appropriate care while recognizing that his early human contact makes him unsuitable for release back into the wild.
