Western Lowland Gorilla at RELEASED.
Wild-caught gorillas like Owando represent a connection to the dense forests of central and western Africa, where western lowland gorillas face mounting pressure from habitat loss and poaching. Born somewhere in the African wilderness to wild parents, he spent his early years in the complex social structures that define gorilla communities in their natural habitat.
After time in managed care, something extraordinary happened. On November 11, 2016, he was released back into the wild — a rare outcome that speaks to both his health and the careful planning of conservation teams. Such releases require extensive preparation and monitoring, as gorillas must readapt to foraging, navigating territorial boundaries, and surviving without human support.
His subspecies faces a precarious future. The IUCN lists western lowland gorillas as Critically Endangered, with populations scattered across fragmented forests in Cameroon, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, and Republic of Congo. Every successful reintroduction matters for the long-term survival of these great apes in the wild.
