Western Lowland Gorilla at Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens, born 2016.
Western lowland gorillas face extinction in the wild, with fewer than 100,000 left across their African range. Oliver represents hope for this critically endangered subspecies through managed breeding programs that maintain genetic diversity in captivity.
Born at Busch Gardens Tampa in August 2016, he grew up under the care of his mother Mary, with Bolingo as his father. Those early years shaped his development as keepers monitored his growth from infant to juvenile within the established troop structure.
After nearly eight years at his birth facility, Oliver made the transition to Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens in January 2024. The move marked a new chapter for the young male as he continues to mature. At eight years old, he has yet to reach full silverback status but remains an important part of conservation efforts for his subspecies.
Captive-born gorillas like Oliver play crucial roles in maintaining viable populations while their wild counterparts face habitat loss and poaching pressures. His genetics contribute to the carefully managed studbook that tracks western lowland gorillas across accredited facilities.
