Western Lowland Gorilla at Mefou Primate Sanctuary, born 2002.
Wild-caught western lowland gorillas like Nyume represent both tragedy and hope in conservation efforts across Central Africa. Born in the wild in May 2002, she was separated from her natural habitat and wild parents before reaching her first birthday. In May 2003, at nearly one year old, she arrived at Mefou Primate Sanctuary, where she has lived for over two decades.
Her early arrival at the sanctuary meant she grew up without the guidance of her biological parents, relying instead on human caregivers and other rescued primates for social development. The transition from wild birth to sanctuary life shaped her formative months during a critical period of development.
Now over twenty years old, she has become one of the long-term residents at Mefou. Her subspecies faces an uncertain future in the wild, with Gorilla gorilla gorilla listed as Critically Endangered by the IUCN due to habitat loss, poaching, and disease.
