Western Lowland Gorilla at Mefou Primate Sanctuary, born 2001.
Wild-born parents gave birth to Nkan Daniel in May 2001, making him part of a generation caught between two worlds. Within weeks of his birth, he arrived at Mefou Primate Sanctuary in Cameroon, where he has lived for over two decades.
Born into captivity but carrying the genetic legacy of wild gorillas, he represents the complex reality facing his subspecies today. His parents’ wild origins connect him directly to the forests of Central and West Africa, where western lowland gorillas face mounting pressures from habitat loss and human encroachment.
At twenty-three years old, he has spent virtually his entire life at the sanctuary. The IUCN lists his subspecies as Critically Endangered, with populations declining across their natural range. Sanctuaries like Mefou play an essential role in caring for gorillas who cannot return to the wild, providing them with as natural an environment as possible while contributing to conservation efforts for the species.
