N'gola

N’gola was a male Western Lowland Gorilla born on 21 June 1977 at the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust. His mother, N’pongo, and his father, Jambo, were both part of the same breeding program, making him a captive‑born offspring.

He spent his entire early life at Durrell, remaining there from birth until 15 April 1984. During those years staff noted his typical black coat, robust build, and the social behaviors characteristic of his subspecies.

On 7 April 2025, at the age of 47, he was humanely euthanised because of illnesses associated with old age. The decision was made after careful veterinary assessment, aiming to prevent further suffering.

His long record of care reflects the dedication of the zookeepers and veterinarians who looked after him throughout his life.
