About Ndeze

Mountain gorillas represent one of the world’s most endangered subspecies, with fewer than 1,000 remaining in the wild. Ndeze belongs to this critically threatened population of Gorilla beringei beringei, born on 17 February 2007 in Congo to parents Safari and Senkwekwe.

Her early months were spent in captive care before multiple relocations shaped her development. She moved to Gorilla Doctors Goma in July 2007 when she was just five months old. Two and a half years later, she left Gorilla Doctors Goma in December 2009.

Eventually, she found her way to the Senkwekwe Orphan Mountain Gorilla Center, where she lives today. The facility specializes in caring for orphaned mountain gorillas, providing crucial support for a subspecies that faces extinction pressures in the wild. Her father Senkwekwe’s name lives on through the center itself, highlighting the interconnected nature of mountain gorilla conservation efforts.

As an adult female mountain gorilla, she represents hope for a subspecies classified as Endangered by the IUCN. Every mountain gorilla in managed care contributes to understanding and preserving these apes for future generations.
