A male western lowland gorilla born at Chessington in 2012, son of Asili and Damisi.
Western lowland gorillas face extinction in the wild, with fewer than 100,000 left across their African range. At Chessington World of Adventure & Zoo, one young male represents hope for his critically endangered subspecies. Born to parents Asili and Damisi in February 2012, Mwana entered the world as part of the European managed breeding program for Gorilla gorilla gorilla.
Raised by his mother within the established troop structure, he has grown from infant to adolescent under the careful watch of experienced keepers. The bond between mother and offspring proves crucial in gorilla development, shaping social behaviors that will define his role within the group. His father Damisi’s genetics contribute to the genetic diversity so vital for the long-term survival of captive populations.
Now over a decade old, Mwana continues his development at the same zoo where he was born. Each year brings physical and behavioral changes as he matures within his family group. His presence helps maintain the social dynamics that make gorilla troops so complex and fascinating to observe.
