A 12‑year‑old male western lowland gorilla, born at Bronx Zoo, now thriving at San Diego Safari Park.
The Bronx Zoo welcomed a new western lowland gorilla on 17 April 2014. His mother, Tuti, and father, Ernie, were present for his first breaths. Growing up under the watchful eyes of keepers, he learned the social nuances of his species in a carefully managed troop.
By late 2025, a move was arranged to give him fresh enrichment opportunities. On 6 November 2025 he arrived at San Diego Safari Park, where his presence has added depth to the resident group. The transition was smooth, and he quickly settled into his new surroundings.
Now twelve years old, he represents a critically endangered subspecies, Gorilla gorilla gorilla, whose wild numbers are alarmingly low. His life in captivity provides valuable insight for conservation programs and offers visitors a chance to connect with a species on the brink.
His lineage traces back to captive‑born parents, emphasizing the importance of managed breeding for the survival of his kind. Each day, he reminds us of the delicate balance between preservation and education.
