Miliki, a 31‑year‑old western lowland gorilla, thrives at Blackpool Zoo after a childhood at Apenheul.
A chilly Christmas day in 1994 saw the arrival of a future matriarch at Apenheul Primate Park. She grew up under the watchful eyes of Dalilah and Bongo, her mother and father, learning the rhythms of troop life in a captive setting. By the time she reached her ninth birthday, keepers recognized her calm demeanor and began planning her next chapter.
November 2003 marked a new horizon as she moved to Blackpool Zoo, where she has spent the bulk of her life. The transition was smooth, and she quickly integrated into the resident group, becoming a familiar face for visitors and staff alike. Her presence adds both stability and interest to the zoo’s primate collection.
Now 31 years old, she represents a critically endangered subspecies, Gorilla gorilla gorilla, highlighting the importance of managed care. Her ongoing health and activity provide valuable insight for conservation programs focused on western lowland gorillas worldwide.
