About Mayumba

Mayumba was a female Western Lowland Gorilla who died on November 3, 2011. She lived for just over six months.

Born on April 25, 2011, at Howletts Wild Animal Park, she was captive-born to parents Mumba and Djala. Shortly after birth, she was transferred to Port Lympne Wild Animal Park, where she spent her brief life.

Her death at such a young age represents the challenges faced by gorillas in captivity, particularly during their vulnerable early months. Despite her short life, she was part of the important Western Lowland Gorilla breeding programs that work to maintain genetic diversity in captive populations.
