Mawenzi

Mawenzi is a female Western Lowland Gorilla living at Givskud Zoo. She was born on 8 March 2009 in the Zoologisch‑botanischer Garten Wilhelma, making her a captive‑born gorilla.

Her parents are Mutasi, her mother, and Kibo, her father. The studbook confirms her direct descent from these well‑documented individuals.

She spent the first seven years of her life at Wilhelma before being transferred to Givskud Zoo on 7 December 2016, and she has remained there ever since. Her presence contributes to the genetic diversity of the European captive Western Lowland Gorilla population.

Daily care includes enrichment programs that encourage natural foraging and social behaviours, and she continues to thrive under the attention of the zoo’s staff.
