About Matadi

Matadi was a male Western Lowland Gorilla who lived to approximately 13 years of age. Born on March 25, 2003, at Twycross Zoo, he was captive-born to parents Ozala and Sekondi.

During his lifetime, he lived at several European zoos. He spent his early years at Twycross Zoo until February 2010, when he moved to Paignton Zoo Environmental Park. In September 2015, he transferred to Howletts Wild Animal Park, and finally moved to the Royal Zoological Society of Antwerp in February 2016.

Matadi passed away at the Royal Zoological Society of Antwerp due to a severe viral and bacterial respiratory infection. His life contributed to the conservation breeding programs for Western Lowland Gorillas across European zoos.
