Western Lowland Gorilla at ABQ BioPark, born 2001.
Western lowland gorillas face extinction in the wild, making every birth in managed care precious for the species’ future. At ABQ BioPark in July 2001, Matadi gave birth to a male who would become known as Mashudu. His father Marcus contributed to what would become more than two decades of life within the same facility.
Captive-born gorillas like Mashudu represent hope for a subspecies under severe pressure. He has spent his entire life at ABQ BioPark, growing from infant to adult silverback under the care of the same team. The bond between mother and son remained strong during his early years, as is typical for gorillas raised in managed populations.
Now over twenty years old, he has witnessed significant changes in gorilla conservation efforts. His subspecies carries the weight of a Critically Endangered classification from the IUCN. Fewer than 100,000 western lowland gorillas survive in their native African forests, making each animal in managed care part of a crucial safety net for the species.
