About Mambie

A captive‑born male western lowland gorilla, Mambie entered the world at Twycross Zoo on 24 March 1991. His mother Biddy and father Mamfe watched him grow amid the bustling visitor area, and his early years set the foundation for a life spent wholly under human care.

In 1999 he made his first move, travelling to Paignton Zoo Environmental Park where he spent three formative years. The shift introduced him to a new troop and a different landscape, experiences that enriched his social repertoire.

October 2002 saw another relocation, this time to Zoo de la Boissière du Dor in France. Five years there added a European chapter to his story before a December 2007 transfer brought him to Bioparc Valencia, where he remains a prominent member of the group. At 35 years old, he continues to thrive, embodying the resilience of his critically endangered subspecies.
