Makari, an 8‑year‑old male western lowland gorilla, lives with his family at Blackpool Zoo.
A playful rumble often signals his presence in the morning mist of Blackpool Zoo. Born on 5 September 2017 to Miliki and Bukavu, he has spent his whole life under the watchful eyes of his caretakers. His subspecies, Gorilla gorilla gorilla, is listed as Critically Endangered, reminding every visitor of the fragile future of wild gorillas.
He enjoys the enrichment activities designed for his troop, from puzzle feeders to climbing structures, and his curiosity never wanes. Keepers note his strong bonds with his mother, Miliki, and the subtle leadership he is beginning to show as he approaches the age of a silverback.
At eight years old, Makari remains a healthy and active member of the Blackpool Zoo community. His continued presence highlights the importance of captive breeding programs for a species on the brink of extinction.
