Western Lowland Gorilla, born at Jardim Zool gico de Lisboa, deceased.
Western lowland gorillas face extinction in the wild, with fewer than 100,000 remaining across their African range. This male gorilla was born to parents Anguka and Nasibu, and arrived at Jardim Zoológico de Lisboa on 20 August 2012.
He was part of the captive breeding program for his critically endangered subspecies. The Portuguese zoo provided care for him during what would prove to be a brief stay in their collection.
On 15 March 2013, he died at Jardim Zoológico de Lisboa. The loss represented another reminder of how precarious existence remains for Gorilla gorilla gorilla, both in captivity and across the remaining fragments of their West African forest home.
