Western Lowland Gorilla at Chessington World of Adventure & Zoo, born 2012.
Western lowland gorillas face extinction in the wild, with fewer than 100,000 left across their range in Central Africa. Every birth in managed care matters for this critically endangered subspecies. Born at Chessington World of Adventure & Zoo in July 2012, Kuanza represents hope for her species’ future.
Her parents, Shanga and Damisi, raised her within the established troop structure that defines gorilla society. Growing up in captivity provides young gorillas like her with consistent care and nutrition that wild populations increasingly struggle to find as their forest habitats shrink.
Now over a decade old, she has spent her entire life at Chessington. The IUCN lists Gorilla gorilla gorilla as Critically Endangered, making every healthy individual in managed breeding programs valuable for maintaining genetic diversity. Her continued presence in the troop contributes to ongoing conservation efforts for one of our closest relatives in the animal kingdom.
