A 6‑year‑old male western lowland gorilla, Kivuli, lives his whole life at Dublin Zoo.
In the leafy enclosure of Dublin Zoo, a young male gorilla draws the attention of visitors with his curious eyes. Born on 12 October 2019 to Vana and Bangui, he entered the world under the watchful care of his mother, a bond that still influences his daily routine. His subspecies, the Western Lowland Gorilla, is listed as Critically Endangered, making his presence in managed care especially important.
His early months were spent nestled within his family’s troop, learning the subtle signals of social interaction. As he grew, keepers noted the gradual shift toward the silverback stage, a transformation that will shape his role in the group. At six years old, he already exhibits the strength and gentle demeanor typical of his kind.
Dublin Zoo remains the sole home for Kivuli; he has never been relocated since his birth. The continuity of his environment allows staff to monitor his health and behavior closely, contributing valuable data for the conservation of his species. Each day, his playful explorations remind us of the wild ancestors he represents, while his safety under human care offers a hopeful glimpse for the future of western lowland gorillas.
