Western Lowland Gorilla at Safaripark Beekse Bergen, born 1997.
Western lowland gorillas face extinction in the wild, with fewer than 100,000 left across their African range. Kisiwa represents one of the captive-born females helping maintain genetic diversity in European breeding programs. She entered the world at Apenheul Primate Park in May 1997, daughter to Dalila and Bongo.
For nearly two decades, she remained with her birth troop at Apenheul. The Dutch primate park provided her formative years, where she learned essential social behaviors from her mother and the extended group. Those early experiences shape how gorillas interact throughout their lives.
In January 2017, she made the transition to Safaripark Beekse Bergen. Such moves are carefully planned within the European breeding program to maintain healthy bloodlines. Now in her late twenties, she has spent over seven years as part of the Beekse Bergen community.
Her subspecies carries the IUCN classification of Critically Endangered. Every captive-born western lowland gorilla like Kisiwa contributes to conservation efforts aimed at preserving these remarkable great apes for future generations.
