Kibu

Wild-caught gorillas like Kibu carry stories we may never fully know. He was born in the forests of Africa on 3 June 1998, spending his earliest months with his natural family before circumstances brought him into human care.

His path to Mefou Primate Sanctuary involved at least one transfer, though the details of his early placement remain unclear from available records. What matters now is his life at the sanctuary, where he has found stability among other rescued primates.

As a western lowland gorilla, he belongs to a subspecies facing severe pressure in the wild. The IUCN lists Gorilla gorilla gorilla as Critically Endangered, making sanctuaries like Mefou essential refuges for animals who cannot return to their natural habitat.

At 26 years old, he has lived most of his life in managed care. His presence at the sanctuary represents both the ongoing crisis facing wild gorilla populations and the commitment of conservation facilities to provide lifetime care for displaced great apes.
