Johari

Johari was born on 26 April 2000 at Melbourne Zoo, the daughter of Julia and Motaba. As a captive‑born western lowland gorilla, she spent her early years with her family in the Melbourne herd.

In September 2013 she was transferred to Taronga Zoo, where she integrated into a new troop and participated in a range of enrichment activities. Over twelve years she became a familiar face to visitors and a steady member of the group.

She returned to Melbourne Zoo on 19 August 2025. Back at her birthplace, she now lives with her family and continues to be an active part of the social group.

In her mid‑twenties, Johari remains healthy and engaged, contributing to the zoo’s conservation education through daily interactions with guests and involvement in breeding awareness programmes.
