Eleven‑year‑old male western lowland gorilla Jahari lives at Lisbon’s Jardim Zoológico, born there in 2015.
A splash of green foliage frames the enclosure where Jahari has spent his entire life. The male was born on 22 February 2015 to Anguka and Nasibu, both members of the same troop. From the first day, keepers noted his calm demeanor as he clung to his mother’s side.
Now eleven years old, he carries the striking features of a western lowland gorilla – dark glossy fur, expressive eyes, and the strong build that defines his subspecies. His status mirrors the plight of his wild relatives, listed as Critically Endangered by the IUCN, reminding visitors of the fragile future of these great apes.
Jahari’s entire story unfolds within the Jardim Zoológico de Lisboa. No transfers have taken him elsewhere; the zoo has been his home from birth, offering a stable environment for him to grow and thrive. His presence enriches the education program, giving guests a living link to conservation efforts across the globe.
