Western Lowland Gorilla at ABQ BioPark, born 2004.
Western lowland gorillas face extinction in the wild, with fewer than 100,000 left across their African range. At ABQ BioPark, one silverback represents nearly two decades of conservation breeding efforts. Born to parents Hope and Marcus in November 2004, he entered the world as part of a carefully managed population.
Captive breeding programs for Gorilla gorilla gorilla track every birth with precision. His arrival marked another step in preserving genetic diversity for this critically endangered subspecies. Growing up under his mother’s care, he developed within the social structure that defines gorilla family life.
Now approaching his third decade, he has spent his entire life at the same facility where he was born. The IUCN lists his subspecies as Critically Endangered, making every healthy male in managed care valuable for future conservation efforts. His presence at ABQ BioPark connects visitors to the urgent reality facing great apes in equatorial Africa.
