Gugas

Gugas is a male Western Lowland Gorilla born on 1 January 1995. He was taken from the wild in Africa and has spent most of his life in European zoos. At 29 years old, he is among the older males of his species.

He arrived at the Jardim Zoológico de Lisboa on 4 March 1996 and stayed until 7 January 1997. The next transfer took him to the Zoologisch‑botanischer Garten Wilhelma, where he lived until 2 October 1998. Since that date he has been a resident of Belfast Zoological Gardens.

His parents are listed as wild, reflecting his origins before capture. The gorilla has no captive‑born offspring and remains a key member of the Belfast troop, contributing to the social dynamics of the group.
