Western Lowland Gorilla at Projet Gorille Fernan-Vaz, born 2004.
Wild-caught as an infant from the forests of Africa, Gimenu represents both the tragedy and hope of western lowland gorilla conservation. Born in June 2004, he began a path through multiple facilities that would eventually lead him to his current home.
After spending time at an unknown location, he arrived at Port-Gentil Zoo in November 2006 as a two-year-old. His early years were marked by adaptation to life in human care, far from the dense rainforests where he was born. The transition from wild infant to zoo resident required careful management during those formative months.
He later moved to Projet Gorille Fernan-Vaz, where he has spent his adult years. Now twenty years old, he has lived most of his life within managed care facilities. His subspecies faces an uncertain future in the wild, with the IUCN listing western lowland gorillas as Critically Endangered.
As one of the older males in the population, his presence contributes to ongoing conservation efforts for his species. The forests of Central and West Africa continue to face pressure from human encroachment, making facilities like his current home increasingly important for the survival of these great apes.
