About Gaya

Gaya was a female Western Lowland Gorilla who died on March 13, 2012. She lived for just over one year, passing away at approximately 1 year and 3 months of age.

Born on December 9, 2010, at Zoo Aquarium de Madrid, she was captive-born to parents Gorka and Malabo. Her brief life was spent entirely at the Madrid zoo, where she both entered and left the world.

Though her time was tragically short, Gaya represented the ongoing conservation efforts for Western Lowland Gorillas in captivity. Her parents’ lineage continues to contribute to the genetic diversity so important for this endangered subspecies.
