A male western lowland gorilla who lived at Dublin Zoo and Longleat Safari Park from 2006 to 2022.
Western lowland gorillas face extinction in the wild, with fewer than 100,000 left across their African range. Evindi was born into this critically endangered subspecies at Dublin Zoo on 8 April 2006, the offspring of Lena and Horst. His early years unfolded within the Dublin troop, where he spent the first six years of his life.
At age six, he transferred to Longleat Safari and Adventure Park in July 2012. The move marked a new chapter in his development, as young male gorillas often relocate between facilities as part of managed breeding programs. He would spend the next decade at Longleat, growing from a juvenile into adulthood.
Evindi’s life came to an end on 18 August 2022 at Longleat, sixteen years after his birth. His story reflects the careful management of captive gorilla populations, where every birth matters for a species teetering on the edge of survival in its native habitat.
