Western Lowland Gorilla at Mefou Primate Sanctuary, born 2026.
Western lowland gorillas face extinction in the wild, with fewer than 100,000 left across their range. Born on June 3rd, 2026, at Mefou Primate Sanctuary, Eto’o represents hope for his critically endangered subspecies. His parents, Avishag and Bobo, brought him into a world where every birth matters for conservation.
Captive breeding programs like the one at Mefou play a crucial role in maintaining genetic diversity among western lowland gorillas. As Gorilla gorilla gorilla populations continue to decline in Central and West Africa, facilities that can successfully breed these great apes become increasingly important.
Still very young, he remains under the care of his mother at the sanctuary where he was born. The IUCN lists his subspecies as Critically Endangered, making each healthy birth a victory for conservation efforts worldwide.
