Étimbouée

Wild-caught gorillas like Étimbouée represent a direct link to the vanishing forests of Central Africa. Born somewhere in the dense rainforests of Gabon, he began life as part of a wild troop before circumstances brought him into human care.

He came to Projet Gorille Fernan-Vaz from an unknown location. The exact timeline of his early years remains unclear, but he eventually found his way to the Gabonese conservation project where he lives today.

As a western lowland gorilla, he belongs to a subspecies facing an uncertain future in the wild. The IUCN lists Gorilla gorilla gorilla as Critically Endangered, with habitat loss and human encroachment continuing to pressure wild populations across their range. Conservation facilities like Projet Gorille Fernan-Vaz work to maintain genetic diversity while supporting field conservation efforts in the region where he was born.
